About Progressive Devotions

A few thoughts about studying God's Word...

What's this all about?

During 17 years of being a Baptist pastor, I've seen lots of folks struggle with their personal and family devotional time. It's easy to flounder, to read without a sense of purpose or direction - to feel like you are not getting anywhere. Many folks who hit that wall stop reading. Others keep going through the motions, but they don't get anything out of it. The purpose of the Progressive Devotions web site is to help you make progress in your Bible reading and, therefore, in your spiritual life.

There are booklets and study guides you can buy to help you, but many of them are like Bible fortune cookies. They talk about an unrelated topic each day, without moving toward a goal. Personally, I've often been hungry for something more during 30 plus years as a Christian. What I hope to offer here is something like a Bible institute, one day at a time. Each day you'll be moving toward mastery of some biblical topic or principle.

Who do you think you are?

I'm not writing these devotionals because I think I'm a brilliant scholar or a sage. Personally, I wanted to do this as a way to think through, organize and record my own beliefs. I'm hoping that doing it in a public forum will give me extra incentive to think clearly and thoroughly, and to stick with the process.

I'm doing my part - now it's up to you.

Six days a week, you can come here to find new devotional material about the curent topic. It will take some dedication on your part to finish the study, but it will be worth the effort. (If it helps, think of me slaving away, studying hard and typing my fingers down to the first joint trying to edify you.) Study whenever you can. Read if you haven't got time to study. Even skimming is better than doing nothing. I only offer the devotional from Monday through Saturday, so you'll have Sunday to catch up if you need it.

God bless you as you study and do His Word.
