Christ Paid For Our Sins

Sharing the Good News

Introduction

Finally, some good news - Jesus paid you sin debt! Today, we'll look at the price that God paid to redeem your soul.

Scripture Reading

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom 5:6-8)

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (1Co 15:3-4)

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isa 53:4-6)

Christ Died for the Ungodly

As we've seen, we were all in trouble. We were sinners under the just condemnation of a holy God. On our own, there was nothing we could do to save ourselves. God revealed His love for us by giving His Son for us. He didn't wait for sinners to clean up their act. Christ died for sinners to make them saints.

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1Jo 4:9-10)

Christ's sacrifice was not a last minute reaction to man's sin. As Paul reminded the Corinthians, it was "according to the Scriptures." Centuries before Paul wrote that, Isaiah predicted the coming of One who would bear our briefs, carry our sorrows, and be wounded for our transgressions. Imagine this - "the LORD ... laid on him the iniquity of us all." Jesus Christ bore the punishment for all the sins of all the people in all the world in every time.
